  1. Ah, yes, that infamous ‘songs we advise you not play’ list in the post 9/11 era. One of the most ridiculous items on the list, in my opinion, was “Benny and the Jets” by Elton John, which isn’t even about planes – it’s about a band and the 70s music industry. But apparently, Clear Channel people thought even the word ‘jets’ would make people uncomfortable in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Compared to that, the censoring of the ‘nuclear war’ line in Electric Six’s “Gay Bar” song seems understandable and reasonable.

Wow. Kidz Bop’s version of “Old Town Road” is nonsensical even by Kidz Bop standards. From the complete and total lack of effort that produced the nonsense line “riding on my bladder” to the line they left unaltered, it’s a bit “What the fudge” moment. (I couldn’t resist, since we are talking about something notorious for its laughable attempts to make non-kid friendly songs kid-friendly).

I can’t stand a lot of Glee covers. I wince when on Halloween, one of those music stations includes Glee covers of songs from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” among the Halloween music.

There are a number of toned-down versions of Thrift Shop. Postmodern Jukebox’s version tones down the swearwords but leaves in the line about R. Kelly’s sheets (which at the time they first did it was referring to a scandal that most people had forgotten about, but later on came the documentary Surviving R. Kelly, which among other things reminded us of the scandal it’s referencing). Anyway, yes, when you’re low on cash, thrift shops might be a good place to check out anyway.

Re: Mudvayne. I’m with you there. If you’re going to do a sanitized version of a song, be consistent in your approach. Don’t just change a few lines involving sensitive subject matter, while leaving other lines dealing with the exact same subject matter in the exact same way unchanged. This is just such a baffling inconsistency. Surely people WERE paying attention here – was the band rebelling against the censors and somehow some lines just got past the censors because said censors just were too lazy to notice?

Halestorm and Alestorm. Now those are two band names no one could confuse, right? 🙂

Not familiar with Gorrilaz, but it sounds like that album is a really frustrating one due to their failure to fully commit to the concept of it.
