Prior to the 1967 expansion, the NHL had never been any further west than St. Louis, Missouri. However, even though the NHL never touched that region of the continent prior to the late 1960’s, professional hockey did exist in the west during the 1910’s and 1920’s thanks to the league known as the Pacific Coast Hockey Association.
