It’s Morphin’ Time: Splendid Seven Style

This “What if Character in Episode/Scene” meme originally belongs MagicalKeyPizzaDan and is dedicated to all of my friends, fellow artists, and fans who highly admire Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and The Splendid Seven consisting of Sesshoumaru, Shuran, Inuyasha, Hakkaku, Ginta, Ayame, and Shunran. Sit back, relax, and soak in that surge of nostalgia when you first tuned in to the main five and eventually main six morphing up to be the Power Rangers. Only this time I have included seven of my most favourite Inuyasha characters of all time.

If there is one moment in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers I have always anticipated, even as I am writing this as an adult approaching 30, it has to be the Morphin’ Time calls before Tommy Oliver during his Green Dragon Zord Ranger tenure as well as his clone Tom Oliver, Zack Taylor as Black Mastodon Ranger I, Kimberly Ann Hart as Pink Pterodactyl Ranger I, Billy Cranston as the Blue Triceratops Ranger, Trini Kwan as Yellow Sabre-Tooth Tiger Ranger I, Tommy Oliver during his White Tiger Ranger tenure, and Jason Lee Scott as Red Tyrannosaurus Ranger I all suit up in their respective ranger attire. I bet you are asking me, why did you not add Rocky DeSantos as Red Ranger II, Adam Park as Black Ranger II, Aisha Campbell as Yellow Ranger II, and Katherine “Kat” Hillard as Pink Ranger II on this meme? As much as I did enjoy Rocky, Adam, Aisha, and Kat as the second Red, Black, Yellow, and Pink Rangers, I found Zack’s charm and charisma, Kimberly’s enthusiasm and grace, Trini’s wisdom and levelheadedness, and Jason’s boldness and determination far more appealing and, therefore, far more memorable. Therefore, the original Morphin’ time calls from Seasons 1 to 2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will always have a special place in my heart.

With my love of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ first three, let alone two, seasons and my enjoyment of Inuyasha; specifically from Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, Ayame, Shuran, Hakkaku, Ginta, and Shunran, combined, this question must be posed. What if Zordon and Alpha 5 not only appointed Tom, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, Tommy, and Jason from Angel Grove, California, USA to be the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers of America but also Shuran, Hakkaku, Shunran, Ginta, Ayame, Sesshoumaru, and Inuyasha from Tokyo, Japan to be their Japanese counterparts, the Mighty Morphin’ Inurangers? The result would be absolutely epic on a transatlantic level. In fact, I could already imagine Scott Logie, Alistair Abell, Jocelyne Loewen, Paul Dobson, Natalie Walters, David Kaye, and Richard Ian Cox on the English side as well as Masaya Takatsuka, Daisuke Kishio, Yuki Masuda, Hiroyuki Yoshino, Yumi Kakazu, Ken Narita, and Kappei Yamaguchi yell “Dragonzord!” for Shuran, “Mastodon!” for Hakkaku, “Pterodactyl!” for Shunran, “Triceratops!” for Ginta, “Sabre-Tooth Tiger!” for Ayame, “Tigerzord!” for Sesshoumaru, and “Tyrannosaurus!” for Inuyasha as they morph into the Inurangers. I can even imagine fans of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Inuyasha be absolutely elated at witnessing such a beautiful sight. It also helps that both character sides have a whole lot more in common than they think.

Shuran and Tommy during his first tenure as the Green Dragonzord Ranger plus his clone Tom may be like chalk and cheese in terms of size, what with Shuran having so much elephantine bulk and Tommy/Tom combining lion-like strength with gazelle-like agility, but they have one physical and psychological trait in common. Both of them are physically strong and extremely determined combatants who would never permit anybody or anything to get them down. Opponents may belittle them and obstacles may be arduous, but both Shuran and Tommy as well as Tom can knock them back with a huge vengeance. Both of them did begin in the side of borderline evil, with Tommy being brainwashed by Rita Repulsa to destroy the Power Rangers, Tom making his debut as Tommy’s evil twin brother, and Shuran as well as his siblings being indoctrinated by the Panther King to destroy Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha, but they eventually saw the light and redeemed themselves; although Tommy in his green ranger tenure and Tom have the dragon’s share of the treasure in stark comparison to Shuran who returned to the West with his older sister Toran and his younger sisters Karan and Shunran. Suffice it to say, Shuran’s and Green Ranger Tommy’s physical, mental, spiritual, and psychological strength is the thing that keeps these warriors alive.

Charisma, hilarity, and affability are the hallmarks of Hakkaku and Zack as Black Mastodon Rangers and as people. Whether Zack has the hip hop dance moves or Hakkaku prides himself on being the shrewd one, both of them are huge balls of energy who keep their groups alive and well even in tough times. Physically speaking, both Zack and Hakkaku can perform death-defying leaps and somersaults like the most agile of gymnasts and can throw down some mean punches and kicks. What makes both Zack and Hakkaku truly strong is the dedication and loyalty they have to their friends, for they will never abandon them let alone walk out on them. They know fully well that their friends need them in any and every situation. One should never mistake Zack’s and Hakkaku’s charm, lovability, and hilarity for their weakness because they can always dish out a huge serving of whoop-ass every way until Sunday. Should anybody be so brazen as to hurt their friends, they will not relent when it comes to unleashing their righteous fury as combatants.

Bring in the roses, gardenias, daisies, daffodils, and cherry blossoms because Shunran and Kimberly are always going to have these fragrant flowers growing in their happy gardens as the Pink Pterodactyl Rangers. Pretty in pink does not even begin to describe both Kimberly and Shunran. Both of these fine ladies are crafty, artistic, levelheaded, graceful, stylish, sassy, and flash, although Shunran has that extra bit of mischief about her that can compliment Kimberly’s graciousness. Speaking of grace and agility, these are physical attributes both Kimberly and Shunran bear as combatants because they can use them as weapons. Kimberly’s training and skill as a gymnast goes well when she puts her fleet feet and quick reflexes into action when it comes to beating up putties. Shunran’s dancer-like grace is shrouded in a lethal package in the form of her cherry blossom illusions and her ability to multiply herself to leave her opponents’ heads spinning around. Even Kimberly would applaud Shunran for pulling off such astoundingly glorious feats of trickery and craftiness. Nothing can stop these ladies from kicking butt while looking as fabulously fly as ever.

Ginta’s and Billy’s nerdy adorability can never be denied. While Billy is a lot more academically apt than Ginta could aspire to be, both of them have sufficient loyalty to their friends as the Blue Triceratops Rangers. They also bear a nervous streak whenever it comes to meeting new people which is nicely combined with an innocence that makes both Billy and Ginta endearing as kind-hearted and valiant gentlemen. Those habits can come in Billy’s tendency to speak in technical jargon while Ginta wears all of his emotions on his sleeves, thus showing a symbiosis of brainy intellect and emotional heart. However, just because both Billy and Ginta are adorably nerdy in their own special ways, with Billy being of the book-smart kind and Ginta being of the street-smart kind, does not mean they cannot be formidable fighters. In fact, both Billy and Ginta are exceptionally agile in their combat moves and have equally fine combat skills, thus dishing out some serious punches, kicks, flips, and various physical stunts that could leave any martial artist and Olympic gymnast completely envious. Brains and heart truly combine as one when Billy and Ginta put their skills and mind to great use in everything they do.

Beauty and fierceness make their entrance in a spellbinding waltz when Ayame and Trini take down their opponents with their fists of fury, fleet feet, and undeterred discipline and dedication to their craft in the martial arts as the Yellow Sabre-Tooth Tiger Rangers. Ayame’s vivacity, fiery nature, and love for life is well balanced by Trini’s conscientiousness, clear sense of focus, and levelheadedness, thus being the definition of yin and yang uniting in balance and stability. While Trini is calm, levelheaded, rather calculating, and stern when something urgent arrives, Ayame is full of fire, passion, relentlessness, steely ambition, and wilful courage. This is also evident in their skills as martial artists. Trini is the definition of floating like a butterfly yet stinging like a bee because her movements have been derived from various Chinese martial arts including but not limited to Shaolin Kung Fu. Ayame is quick reflexes, fleet feet, and furious fists incarnate, for she can leave more than a dent on anybody who dares crosses her path, thus combining elements of kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Kyokushin Karate into one beautifully fierce amalgamation. Overlooking their vastly different approaches to combat, Trini and Ayame share the values of respect, allegiance, duty, honour, valour, perseverance, and dignity, for they are fully armed with these traits that have been defining them as warriors and as individuals. They also hold the protection of their friends and family to an extremely high regard because they do not want to see the ones they love and care for hurt. When all is said and done, Trini and Ayame do not use their combat skills to show their strength. Rather, they use it for self-defence, thus making them vessels of discipline, dedication, and integrity, to overcome all odds.

Sesshoumaru and Tommy during his tenure as the White Tigerzord Ranger could not be any more alike when it comes to the strength, valour, and stamina they have as martial artists. Despite the fact that Tommy started his Power Ranger career as the Green Dragonzord Ranger, his ascension to being the White Tigerzord Ranger is a glorious combination of redemption of his powers and rising above what he can be and more. Sesshoumaru’s growth as a warrior and as a person is definitely a whole lot more latent than Tommy’s, but they share the journey of self-actualisation, perseverance, and redemption, especially when it comes to the people they have in their lives. In their respective canon, Tommy has Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Zack to remind him that he is never alone and he can always have his friends be there by his side. Sesshoumaru might have been constantly involved in a bitter feud with his younger brother, Inuyasha, due to his hanyou lineage and his own ruthless bias towards humankind, but he does grow to begrudgingly respect him; and this growth was specifically propelled when he revived Rin the orphan girl with his Tenseiga after she was mauled by a pitifully lowdown and cowardly excuse of a wolf warrior’s wolves whose name does need to be said here, but you all know who he is. Speaking of powerful swords, while Tommy as the White Ranger possesses Saba, Sesshoumaru bears a whopping three swords: Tenseiga the sword of life, Tokijin the sword forged from Goshinki’s fangs, and Bakusaiga the sword which was developed from Sesshoumaru’s own will, thus seeing his right arm regrow and finding his own path as a true warrior. In fact, Saba and Tenseiga as well as Bakusaiga are parallels to each other in the sense that they are not just weapons their respective masters, Tommy and Sesshoumaru, wield in battle, but they are also an integral part of their being and overall character development, especially when it comes to growing compassion, loyalty, and protection to those who are oppressed. The only difference between Tommy and Sesshoumaru is that Tommy is a lot more sanguine and chill towards his friends and even gallant towards his girlfriend Kimberly, while Sesshoumaru maintains that aloof, cold, and calculating personality while doing his best to expertly hide what little warmth he has in his being, until what happened to Rin in the netherworld did he shed some tears knowing that he tried to do what he could to save her. Complimenting how Tommy and Sesshoumaru grew as individuals, their physical prowess as martial artists is utterly god-tier, thus combining strength, determination, accuracy, and tact in all of their attacks against their opponents. There is also that yin and yang aspect to how both Tommy and Sesshoumaru use martial arts, with Tommy having the tendency to use Kiai a whole lot in battle complete with fierce movements and Sesshoumaru using minimal Kiai unless provoked but still accompanied with heaps of precision. Tommy’s and Sesshoumaru’s paths to being enlightened warriors were never easy, but it was cathartic to see both of them grow in their own special ways and be more than just who they think they are.

Stoke the fire of triumph and feed the flame of victory, for Inuyasha and Jason enter the arena as the valorous, bold, and powerful Red Tyrannosaurus Rangers. These two are complete athletes and warriors through and through with two varying leadership styles. Where Jason is more take-charge and takes on the full reins when necessary, Inuyasha is a combination of being high-strung and taking full initiative of every confrontation that is presented to him. Physically speaking, whether one throws Jason and Inuyasha in a karate ring, a kickboxing ring, a wrestling arena, a bench press match, a basketball court, a football field or a sparring mat, thus sparring in various martial arts with their friends and family, they can dish out every move they make with fortitude and an iron will that will never corrode under pressure. To them, complacency is the kiss of death, and they are not willing to back down without a fight. Aside from their peerless physical prowess and strong sense of competition, both Jason and Inuyasha are fiercely loyal to their friends and family. Like any good leader should do, they always put others before themselves. Sure, there are occasions where they tend to be rather big for their boots let alone beat themselves up, but they would never turn their backs on those they consider as close friends and family. Jason and Inuyasha are definitely exemplary examples of being pillars of strength.

Now, it is time for the Power Rangers of Angel Grove and the Inurangers of Tokyo to step up the podium and meet each other. Both parties amicably and joyously greet each other. Shuran and Tom greet each other with a fist bump, with the latter giving the former a huge bear hug full of joy. Hakkaku and Zack greet each other with a high-five and address each other as homeboy and brotha. Shunran and Kimberly excitedly shout and joyously embrace each other. Ginta and Billy clasp hands and embrace each other. Ayame and Trini embrace each other, clasp hands, and call each other my soul sister. Sesshoumaru and Tommy shake each others’ hands, clasp them, and consider each other their good friend and their best opponent. Inuyasha and Jason are overjoyed to see each other, considering how exceptionally they match each other in strength and combat prowess, greet each other with a fist bump, a hand clasp, and eventually a tight hug to show that their friendship is truly genuine. Finally, it is time for Jason and Inuyasha to start the morph into Power Rangers and Inurangers.

Jason: All right, man. Are you ready for this?

Inuyasha: Bro, I was born ready.

Jason and Inuyasha (in unison, as they and their friends stand ready for combat): It’s Morphin Time!

(Both Power Rangers and Inurangers prepare their power morphers. Their respective signs flash, and the morphing begins.)

Tom and Shuran (in unison): Dragonzord!

Zack and Hakkaku (in unison): Mastodon!

Kimberly and Shunran (in unison): Pterodactyl!

Billy and Ginta (in unison): Triceratops!

Trini and Ayame (in unison): Sabre-Tooth Tiger!

Tommy and Sesshoumaru (in unison): Tigerzord!

Jason and Inuyasha (in unison): Tyrannosaurus!

(Zoom in on Jason and Inuyasha. Their faces are now covered with their helmets. Both sets of rangers are fully morphed.)

Tom, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, Tommy, and Jason (in unison): Power Rangers!

Shuran, Hakkaku, Shunran, Ginta, Ayame, Sesshoumaru, and Inuyasha (in unison): Inurangers!

Oh, yeah, this is glorious. I hope you all enjoyed this, and I will see you in the next submission. Take care, stay safe, and have a morphinominal time, everybody.

Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru, Ayame, Ginta, Shunran, Hakkaku, and Shuran from Inuyasha belong to Rumiko Takahashi and Sunrise.

Jason Lee Scott, Tommy Oliver as the White Ranger, Trini Kwan, Billy Cranston, Kimberly Ann Hart, Zack Taylor, Tommy as the Green Ranger/Tom Oliver from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers belongs to Saban and Toei.
