Hey guys! Gerawallstar here and I am here to review the first ever PIXAR film Toy Story which was released in 1995. When this film was released, it was a global phenomenon with critics and at the box office earning over $373 million worldwide making this not only the highest grossing film of that year but it made CGI animation a force to be reckon with. In my opinion, I loved this movie when I was a child. I still love it to this day. It is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Story:
The story is about a cowboy doll named Woody meeting a toy named Buzz Lightyear that was a birthday present from Andy. He gets jealous of Buzz, and they get lost at a pizza joint, thus entering Sids house, so it’s up for them to get back into Andy’s house before he moves away. Whew! That was a lot to go over. As for the story, the story is fantastic. What makes this story great are the adventures that Woody and Buzz go on, and the stakes that they have to go through throughout the movie. The scenes such as The RC chase, Sids house, Woody and Buzz fighting and Sid learning a lesson from the toys are all memorable. This film is also funny with witty dialogue such as “YOU ARE A TOY!!!!”, and “Buzz look an alien!” Dialogue like that makes the story and the movie stand out. Another thing that makes the story good is how well the relationship between Woody and Buzz is written. The story is beautiful and well-written. I give the story ten stars.
Animation:
Keep in mind that the animation may have not aged well in this day and age since this was made during the very early days of computer animation. However, for PIXARS first film and the first CGI film, its astounding how the animators pulled all that effort off. What I loved about the animation are the designs of the toys. It really makes up for the dated CGI because the way that the toys are animated looks like actual toys. I even loved the little details in most of the designs such as the spoon from the froot loops. I agree with Nostalgia critic about the spoon looking like a real spoon. One criticism I could mention is how weird and uncanny the humans look in this movie. However, this is forgiven since this film was released in 1995, and it was difficult to animate humans at the time because there wasnt a lot of software in computer animation. The animation is stellar for it’s time and it is still good to this day. I give the animation ten stars.
Characters:
The characters are all fantastic and memorable. Woody is an excellent character with him being a leader, and wise. His cockiness and jealousy builds his character in not only making him relatable but a three dimensional character. Buzz is also an outstanding character with him being delusional about being a space ranger and then realizing that he is not one(spoilers). The other toys such as Rex, Hamm, Mr. Potato Head and Bo Peep are all iconic and recognizable characters. Andy is a relatable child character. Even Sid is an memorable character with him representing kids that like to destroy toys. All of the characters are brilliant, and they drive the movie tremendously. I give the characters ten stars.
Verdict:
Toy Story is an example of a perfect movie with its beautiful storytelling, excellent animation, and iconic characters. Everything great about this film makes the film stand a test of time as the first CGI film and I’m glad that this film became the film that brought CGI into a whole new world. I give this masterpiece ten stars out of ten.
