“Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” is a series created and developed by the This Is It Company, a group of talented visual artists, using a clever combination of live-action puppetry, costumes, meticulously crafted scenic compositions and various animation techniques (including CGI).
Each episode is a twisted spin on the classic children’s program formula a la “Sesame Street” and similar shows, taking the supposed lightheartedness of a specific learning experience meant for the young and perverting it to the point it resembles a nightmare-fueled horror concocted by David Lynch. Which is a visually creative way of saying that the line between “child-friendly” television and the disturbing darkness hidden within the apparent innocence of it all is only one unchecked wandering of the mind away from disappearing, thus turning educational fun-time into an allegory for a childhood trauma.
