Hello and welcome to In Too Deep, where I over-analyse a certain section of pop culture.
Now I’ve been playing Super Smash Bros for the 3DS and I have to say, it’s a fun game. It’s the first Super Smash Bros I’ve ever played, but I do enjoy having various Nintendo characters battling each other in specially created stages. Now, granted, I don’t know who half these characters are, nor get half the references, but it got me thinking: What if Disney did the same? Well, lets find out.
So before we start, a few ground rules:
1)This is never going to happen. Disney will never commission a fighting game, so expecting there to be one is absurd.
2)There can only be 51 characters and 24 stages (aka fighting arenas). Hence some properties are going to be left out.
3)There’s going to be no order to this, just putting them in via how good I think they’d be in the role.
And finally 4)I’m solely limiting myself to the Disney Animated Canon (with some exceptions) of the current 52 films. As such, Big Hero 6 won’t be on the list (since it ain’t out in my country yet), nor anything from Pixar/Star Wars/Marvel/live action. I’ll do a seperate list for them at some point.
And with that out of the way, lets begin:
1)Toontown.
Characters: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto.
Reasoning: The first six characters that make an appearance are the six most famous. Naturally the place they’ll be fighting in is Toontown, a world featuring animate buildings and the like. It’ll be constantly scrolling along, with a trolley appearing occasionally to know players over. But this is where it all starts.
2)Old Toontown.
Characters: Old Mickey, Old Donald, Old Goofy, Oswald.
Reasoning; It makes sense, what with the popularity of Oswald, to have a stage based around him. Likewise, as Kingdom Hearts proved, you could easily have Donald and Goofy look like their old selves with no one minding. Put everything in black and white and set it up a bit like Epic Mickey and you are good to go.
3)Arendelle.
Characters: Elsa, Anna, Hans, Kristoff.
Reasoning: It’s Frozen. Is it any wonder that characters 11-14 would be based on Disney’s hottest property right now? Plus who wouldn’t want to beat up Hans cos screw Hans, he’s so evil. Since it’s probably going to be in the next Kingdom Hearts game it’s going on this list here.
4 & 5)Fantasia: Night on Bald Mountain and Rites of Spring.
Characters: Sorcerer Mickey.
Reasoning: Besides how fabulous it’ll look, they would be very interesting stages. One with Chernaborg in the background taking you on by throwing stuff at you (and summoning minions), one featuring the happy fluffy flowers and whatnot. And no, I’m not just stealing from Kingdom Hearts. Promise.
6)Princess Castle.
Characters: Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel.
Reasoning: Characters 16-21 will naturally be the princesses who aren’t quite unique enough to get their own stage, but by no means obscure enough not to be featured. So by giving the player a stage somewhat unique to the princesses is probably the smartest way to go about it.
7)Dark Castle
Characters: Maleficent, Dr. Falicer.
Reasoning: For every yin there’s a yang, and a dark castle controlled by the bad guys is a fantastic idea indeed. Similar to the previous one, this reskin would offer new challenges like thorns being placed around it. And since Maleficient and Dr. Falicer are the Disney princess villains most likely to go on the offensive, it makes sense that they’ll fight here.
8, 9 & 10)Fix It Felix Jr, Hero’s Duty, Sugar Rush.
Characters: Ralph, Vanollepe, King Candy.
Reasoning: Since Wreck-It Ralph is the video game movie, it makes sense that they’ll have a movie based on their story. It would actually be quite a lot of fun, what with the characters knowing they’re in a video game. Plus since they were designed for being a video game, they wouldn’t be that hard to fit in.
11 & 12)Forest & Jungle.
Characters: Pocahontas, Tarzan, Mowgli.
Reasoning: Taking out the middle of our list is the same idea doubled over: A wooded area featuring Pochaontas, a jungle area featuring Tarzan and Mowgli. It’d be a neat place to play around in, having these somewhat obscure characters coming out to shine in this new world.
13)Pleasure Island
Characters: Pinocchio
Reasoning: Pleasure Island has always been the most surreal aspect of Pinocchio, so having a stage there makes perfect sense when you think about it. Plus Pinocchio, fighter number 30, would be an interesting character to use. Since Pleasure Island is the part people remember about the episode, having it put here would not be surprising.
14)Pride Lands
Characters: Simba, Scar.
Reasoning: Aside from the fact that The Lion King is one of Disney’s biggest films, it would be a neat twist to see it played out in real time. Nothing more to add than that it’d be awesome to have Timon and Pumba assist you.
15)One Hundred Acre Woods.
Characters: None.
Reasoning: The Winnie the Pooh characters aren’t made for fighting, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a world based around it either. Have bees swarm around attacking the player, or destroy Rabbit’s garden to get power-ups. There’s a lot of fun you can have with a concept like this, even if you can’t really have them fighting.
16)Mouse World
Characters: Miss Bianca, Bernard, Basil, Ratigan.
Reasoning: Characters 33-36 all come from a unique world, one where mice are the main focus of the story. So, by having a world where you fighting from a mouse-sized perspective, you open up a lot of new and interesting possibilities. The world from the mouse’s point of view is nothing new, but would still be a fun stage.
17)Atlantica.
Characters: Ariel, Ursula.
Reasoning: Having a stage where the gravity is weakened would change gameplay dramatically. Failing that, it’d still be interesting to set a stage underwater, since I don’t think any of the Smash Bros games have done that yet. Plus I like the movie after working at the ride.
18)Beast’s Castle.
Characters: Belle, Beast, Gaston.
Reasoning: The characters speak for themselves, but the world is again another way of making the games more interesting. What would a world like this be like? Think about all the fun you could have. And no, I’m not biased because I worked at a restaurant based on the movie.
19)Wonderland.
Characters: Alice, Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts.
Reasoning: Coming in places 43-45 are some fantastic characters in a world where you could really muck around with size and perspective. You could have it being a roaming map, going through to different locations in the film. It’d certainly be a lot of fun.
20)Agrabah
Characters: Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, Jafar.
Reasoning: Need I say any more? If it’d good enough for Kingdom Hearts, it’s good enough for here.
21)Notre Dame.
Characters: Quasimodo, Frollo.
Reasoning: Finishing the list comes a film that’s often overlooked, but nevertheless beautiful. Plus who wouldn’t want to beat Frollo up, considering he’s the most evil Disney villain of all time?
So there you have it. My brief imagining of a Disney version of Super Smash Bros. If you disagree with anything, or have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment. Till next time.
