Hello and welcome to In Too Deep, where I over-analyse a certain section of pop culture.
Now fair due, I haven’t seen much of Gotham yet. At time of writing I’ve only seen the first episode. But I’ve seen enough to have a reasonable guess about who is going to show up in the rest of the season. So without further ado, here are my brilliant guesses that I will no doubt ignore if I get any of them wrong.
But first off, a few rules. One: These are the villains of the Batman universe, not the supporting characters. Two: They have to match the ages shown in the series. Harvey Dent/Two Face is off the list because he’s Bruce’s age in the show. Third: These characters have to have a grounding in reality. These are the sort of people who you should see on the street, not using anything unrealistic in any way. So without further ado, lets begin:
6)Professor Pyg: Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy made an appearance since he’s the newest member of Batman’s rouge’s gallery. A man in a pigs mask who loves to experiment on people, so far he’s only been in the comics and the Beware the Batman TV series. He’s still fresh enough that he could be a real twist if brought into the series, since no one will really see it coming but would fit in well with the series mythos. A mad serial killer committing horrific murders while wearing a pig mask. It could even be the first ‘supervillain’ that Gordon faces. However, despite the neat twist of having such a new villain appear, I doubt it’s really going to happen. It’s a reference too far, something that’ll have the regular viewer scratching their head. Still, I wouldn’t rule this one out entirely.
5)Mad Hatter: Again, another one that makes sense to appear but isn’t likely too. The concept of the Mad Hatter is an interesting one, since it’s essentially a riff on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But you could easily bring in the character into the show as another serial-killer like character for Gordon to chase. He’s just well-known enough for people to know he exists, but obscure enough that you could play around with the character a lot. Plus it would be a nice way of hinting at the more fantastical nature of Gotham, by showing a character so unhinged with reality. Whether they go through with this or not will remain to be seen but, since the Hatter in general has always been one of my favourite characters in fiction, a new portrayal of him would be interesting.
4)Clayface: Now a man made out of clay is too unbelievable, especially for this series. But before his accident, Clayface was in fact a fantastic actor. So what if the logical extension of this concept was the idea that he was a master of disguise? A man who could put on the face of someone else and act out their life? Or at the very least, someone who used makeup and whatnot to change faces on the fly. If I’m honest, this is one of those ‘no duh’ villains that the show is probably going to use since it’s quite a simple yet brilliant idea. So I won’t be surprised if they bring him into the series this way.
3)Scarecrow: Again, another one I won’t be surprised by if they decide to bring him in. A psychiatrist character would be an interesting avenue to explore, even if we remove the fear gas aspect from the equation. A highly disturbed individual who would probably need to work with Gotham police to help capture the more insane individuals. It’d be interesting to see what drove this character to act the way he did, since he was barely used in Batman Begins.
2)Black Mask: If there’s one downside to Gotham it’s that it’s kinda obvious who lives and who dies. The Penguin isn’t going to die any time soon… but the crime boss Fish most certainly is. I mean she’s pretty much set-up to die. That’s not a spoiler, that’s pretty much fact. So who is going to replace her? Well Black Mask is a character that has always sort of existed in the Batman mythos but only really came to the foreground in Batman: Arkham Origins. He’s the go-to criminal boss when it comes to most adaptations. If and when the crime boss dies, my money is he’s the next one that steps up to the plate.
1)Hugo Strange: Hugo Strange is going to be in this TV show. That… That’s not even speculation, that’s just pure fact. Hugo Strange is going to be in this TV show and will help out a young Bruce Wayne. There’ll be an episode almost dedicated to it, since it’ll play an integral part in helping to define the future of a young Batman. This is going to happen, and if it doesn’t, I’ll eat my hat.
So there you have it. My look at the future of Gotham. If you disagree with anything, or have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment. Till next time.
