Sometimes Indians have first-world problems too.
On Youtube for free.
Siddharth, or Sid for short, is in a hospital stressing out over a woman who is suffering from liver damage. He calls up Sameer, whom he has not talked to for a while. Sam thinks to call up another friend, Aakash, but Sid does not think that Aakash will want to come. And...Read Full Post »

For a few weeks, this was the number 2 movie in South Korea behind the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie and the lead was the first Asian to get the Best Actress award at Cannes. Just saying.

Once upon a time in a forest lived a man and his beautiful daughter. One day, a gold carriage drawn by six horses stopped before their house. Out of the carriage stepped a king. “Would you give me your daughter to be my wife?” he asked the man. Well, so far, this seems like a perfectly appropriate film for Valentine’s Day.

The Lunar New Year will begin at the end of the month and, instead of discussing some dumb comedy, I felt that it would be more appropriate to bring up a modern epic about one of the most important battles in Chinese History.
Before I start, I will point out that a streaming version of this movie is available to rent both from Amazon and Youtube. Don’t bother with it. That is one-part version tha...Read Full Post »

Last year’s WTF ASIA may have ended with a movie about peaceful resistance, but 2014 is starting out with a bang. Well, several bangs. And slices. This is The Machine Girl. On Hulu for free: http://www.hulu.com/watch/399821

Did you see Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies? Did you see the extended versions? If so, then there is no reason why you would not be able to sit through a movie that is almost three hours and forty-five minutes long. About playing Cricket! Got your attention now, haven't I?
For free on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kZ4rqqOBvY

The Lunar New Year is still over a month away, but I am guessing that most of you are more familiar with the earlier Solar New Year. So I am posting this now. All's Well, Ends Well celebrates the Hong Kong New Year tradition of releasing movies that are gleefully stupid.
Moon, Foon, and So are three brothers who live with their parents. That part of the story is normal in Asian society. The parents ...Read Full Post »

Happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Americans. And, hello to everyone else. This week, I present a movie about both the founding of a nation and its reconnection with its religious roots. The nation, by the way, is Pakistan. This is Silent Waters.

Thanksgiving is next Thursday here in the United States, and in preparation, I have decided to discuss a dark comedy where numerous Indians come into contact with an English Christian and end up dead. Okay, so that is kind of a misleading description of the movie, but you wouldn’t know that. This is 7 Khoon Maaf.
The movie starts out with a woman in a room…with a gun…...Read Full Post »

So, Spike Lee’s remake (or re-adaptation) of Oldboy is coming out in two weeks, so the logical thing to do is for me to make a blog post about Park Chan-wook’s movie, Oldboy. The thing is, I didn’t like that movie. So this is a Park Chan-wook movie concerning someone else named Lee: Lady Vengeance.

About thirteen years ago, my college buddies and I went to see a movie. It was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Yep.
It is the late 18th century. Master Wudan fighter Li Mu Bai has returned home early from training in the mountains. A sense of endless sorrow during meditation training has convinced him to give up his warrior life, even though he has yet to avenge his master’s murder at the han...Read Full Post »

Out of the twenty-six Asian movies that I have reviewed for this site so far, a few could be considered somewhat scary, but only one could be classified as an actual horror movie, and even that one has caveats. Well, it is time for me to change this by bringing you all THE MOST FRIGHTENING, HORRIFYING, AND TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WILL EVER HAVE!

Company is the last organized crime film that I will be talking about for…well, a couple of weeks, at least. While the others were humorous in their own ways, this one is pretty serious, though maybe you can find some unintentional comedy from it, it is Bollywood after all. While it may not be as gory as some of the others, the tone of it may make for more unsettling viewing.

At a time when many are furloughed and so many are out of work, those who have jobs can count their lucky stars. But is that enough? The first line in A Company Man is “Do you like your job?” A job that takes up all of your time and all of your thoughs. A job that eats away at your passions, at your soul. That makes you hurt people and, in this case, kill people. Yeah, this is about hitmen.
