90’s Expansion Pack (Ottawa)

After nearly a decade and a half of expansion, the NHL’s size remained locked at 21 teams throughout the 1980’s. But, after the Wayne Gretzky trade to L.A. in 1988 grew hockey’s popularity in that city, the league began to look at tapping into new markets during the ‘90’s.

In the second year of this 90’s expansion effort two new teams joined the fray. The second of which set up shop in the Canadian capital and was named after one of the NHL’s founding four hockey clubs; the Ottawa Senators.
